“Illinois has grappled with gross mismanagement and a lack of transparency for far too long. As we continue to work to fix those problems, we should not backpedal on an issue as important as this by completely cutting out the voting public.” - Senator Melinda Bush (D-Grayslake)

NewJerseyPollingPlace2008RSPRINGFIELD - Today, State Senator Melinda Bush (D-Grayslake) voted to ensure that voters continue to have the right to elect a person of their choosing to represent them in state government.

“The state Comptroller’s term is an elected, 4-year position,” State Senator Melinda Bush (D-Grayslake) said. “It should be the people, not the politicians who decide who they want to represent them as our state’s chief fiscal officer.”

House Bill 4576, which passed the Senate today with Bush’s support, creates a special election for state comptroller in 2016. With the recent passing of Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka the legislation will allow voters to select a new comptroller at the next general election. The special election is a solution that allows voters to pick who serves as comptroller at no additional cost to taxpayers.

SPRINGFIELD - The State Senate adopted a resolution today naming the second week of December 2014 as Dyslexia Awareness Week in Illinois.

“We need to do a better job of identifying dyslexia," said State Senator Melinda Bush (D-Grayslake), who sponsored the resolution.  “We need to increase awareness so that parents and teachers understand the signs and can make determinations about screening and support early on.”

Dyslexia affects 70-80% of people with reading difficulties and is more common than autism or attention deficit disorder. However, awareness and identification of the learning disability are still severely lacking in Illinois.

SPRINGFIELD - A creative new retirement savings plan passed both chambers of the General Assembly this week and will now move to the governor for signature into law.

The Secure Choice Savings Program, cosponsored by State Senator Melinda Bush (D-Grayslake), will give employees access to portable savings accounts if their employer is a business with 25 or more workers that has been in existence for at least two years and doesn’t already offer employee retirement plans.

“There are 2.5 million Illinois workers who may retire in poverty because they do not have access to even the simplest of retirement plan options through their employers,” Bush said. “This plan allows them more control over their financial futures.”
