IPC AwardRGRAYSLAKE - The Illinois Poison Center (IPC) this week presented State Senator Melinda Bush with the IPC Lifesaver Award in recognition of the Senator’s continued commitment to protecting Illinois residents’ health and safety.

The honor was bestowed on state senators and representatives who demonstrated their dedication to the IPC by supporting a dedicated funding source for the state’s only poison center.

“Each year, the IPC takes more than 82,000 calls from Illinois residents with almost half of the cases involving small children,” said IPC Medical Director Michael Wahl, M.D., who presented Senator Bush with the Lifesaver Award on behalf of the organization. “Senator Bush’s support allows the IPC to continue to provide critical information in emergency situations for families and health care providers around the state.   We extend our deepest gratitude to Senator Bush and the ILGA for their efforts to save the IPC.”

There has been a great deal of conversation over the course of the last few weeks on the education funding reform legislation known as Senate Bill 16. I wanted to take this opportunity to explain the history of the bill and my position, given its projected effect on many school districts in our communities.

On July 9, 2013, the Senate unanimously passed a resolution creating the Education Funding Advisory Committee. Immediately upon the resolution’s passage, I was appointed to the committee. This bipartisan group of state senators spent more than a year travelling the state to discuss education funding concerns with community and school district stakeholders.

As a member of the committee, I was (and still am) in strong support of the progress that has been made. There is no denying that we have made huge strides over the last year in terms of education funding reform. We got the conversation started and have identified undeniable problems with the current funding formula. However, work on this issue is far from done.

ZION - State Senator Melinda Bush (D-Grayslake) held a job fair and hiring event last Thursday for the citizens of Lake County. Nearly 300 jobseekers attended the event. Senator Bush, Congressmen Brad Schneider, the Illinois Department of Employment Security and the Jobs Center of Lake County collaborated with over 50 employers to provide instantaneous matching between job-seekers and on-site employers.

The gymnasium at the Zion Park District Leisure Center was filled to capacity as job seekers handed out over 800 resumes to prospective employers. As people made their way through the crowded gymnasium, over 90 interviews were conducted on-site.

“Unemployment remains disproportionately high in the Zion area,” Bush said. “That is why we have chosen to hold this hiring event here and will continue to do so in the future.”
