There has been a great deal of conversation over the course of the last few weeks on the education funding reform legislation known as Senate Bill 16. I wanted to take this opportunity to explain the history of the bill and my position, given its projected effect on many school districts in our communities.

On July 9, 2013, the Senate unanimously passed a resolution creating the Education Funding Advisory Committee. Immediately upon the resolution’s passage, I was appointed to the committee. This bipartisan group of state senators spent more than a year travelling the state to discuss education funding concerns with community and school district stakeholders.

ZION - State Senator Melinda Bush (D-Grayslake) held a job fair and hiring event last Thursday for the citizens of Lake County. Nearly 300 jobseekers attended the event. Senator Bush, Congressmen Brad Schneider, the Illinois Department of Employment Security and the Jobs Center of Lake County collaborated with over 50 employers to provide instantaneous matching between job-seekers and on-site employers.

The gymnasium at the Zion Park District Leisure Center was filled to capacity as job seekers handed out over 800 resumes to prospective employers. As people made their way through the crowded gymnasium, over 90 interviews were conducted on-site.

“Unemployment remains disproportionately high in the Zion area,” Bush said. “That is why we have chosen to hold this hiring event here and will continue to do so in the future.”
